Safety
Ignition systems can produce high voltage. Work with the engine off and cool. Keep the key or transmitter away as appropriate, and follow the manufacturer’s battery and ignition-system precautions.
Stop if access requires high-voltage hybrid/EV work, fuel-system opening, damaged wiring repair beyond your training, or removal of components you cannot safely support and reinstall.

Preparation
Confirm the diagnosis and exact part application
Recheck which cylinder and component were proven faulty. Match the replacement to the VIN, engine, connector, and supersession information from a reliable catalog.
Review the service procedure before disassembly
Identify access components, battery precautions, fastener specifications, connector locks, boot/seal instructions, and any initialization or verification steps.
Let the engine cool and organize the work area
Clean loose debris around the coil and plug well so it does not enter the opening.
Removal
Remove only the access components the procedure specifies
Track fasteners and hose or connector locations. Do not pull on wiring or brittle plastic.
Release the electrical connector correctly
Inspect the lock, terminals, seal, and nearby harness for damage or contamination.
Remove the coil fastener and coil
Pull in the direction the design allows, supporting the body rather than the wiring. Inspect the boot and plug well for oil, coolant, water, carbon tracking, or corrosion.
Installation
Compare the old and replacement components
Confirm connector, mounting, boot length, seals, and application before installation.
Install any specified seal or boot treatment
Use only the product, amount, and location stated by the manufacturer. More is not better.
Seat the coil and tighten the fastener to the verified specification
Start fasteners by hand. Do not guess torque or use a value from a different engine.
Reconnect and reassemble
Confirm connector locks and harness routing. Reinstall access components according to their procedures and specifications.
Verification

- Start the engine and observe the original symptom
- Check warning lights and scan data
- Recreate the original load and temperature conditions safely
- Confirm misfire counts do not return

Torque specifications
IAR intentionally does not publish a universal coil-fastener torque. The value and procedure can vary by fastener, engine, mounting material, and access component.
