Procedure and interpretation
Apply the stop-driving gate
Record whether the malfunction indicator is flashing, power is severely reduced, the engine is overheating, fuel odor or smoke is present, or mechanical noise has changed.
Unsafe operation is stopped before a road test or repeated loaded misfire attempt.
A flashing warning or severe symptom changes the driving decision; it is not a reason to keep testing under load.
Save the complete fault context
Capture stored, pending, and permanent codes, freeze frame, misfire counters, engine load, speed, temperature, fuel trims, and companion faults before clearing anything.
The conditions that triggered detection remain available for comparison.
P0300 or a cylinder-specific code identifies a detected combustion pattern, not automatically the failed part.
Define the pattern
Compare one cylinder versus multiple cylinders, one bank versus both banks, idle versus load, cold versus warm, and recent work or fluid intrusion.
The complaint is classified by operating condition and scope rather than by code shorthand alone.
Pattern changes the next branch; a single-cylinder and a bank-wide event do not justify the same test.
Inspect before disturbing the system
Check connectors, grounds, intake paths, fluid intrusion, harness routing, recent work, and visible damage while preserving the original arrangement.
Obvious evidence is recorded without swapping or replacing components prematurely.
A disturbed connection or shared supply can affect multiple cylinders and can be missed after parts are moved.
Run a controlled contribution or cause-group test
Use the approved method for cylinder contribution, ignition energy, injector command, fuel/air condition, or mechanical comparison, and compare compatible results only.
At least one cause group is supported or rejected by repeatable evidence within the vehicle and equipment limits.
A changed symptom after a component swap is a clue only when the swap is compatible, controlled, and followed by verification.
Repair the supported cause and verify
Correct the documented condition, then confirm smooth operation, stable related data, no returning misfire, and the original temperature/load condition without masking the monitor.
The original misfire pattern does not return and the vehicle remains safe to operate.
A cleared code or temporary smooth idle is not sufficient proof if the enabling condition was not reproduced.
