Procedure and interpretation
Document the no-crank condition
Record silence, one click, rapid clicking, slow rotation, lamp dimming, shifter position, and whether a jump attempt changes the response.
The symptom is specific enough to choose a test path.
Different sounds can involve battery delivery, control, cable loss, or motor load; a click alone is not a starter diagnosis.
Confirm the start request
Use the correct scan or circuit information to verify key/start input, Park/Neutral or clutch recognition, and security authorization where supported.
The request reaches the expected control path without bypassing an interlock.
A missing command redirects the diagnosis away from the motor and toward control, input, or authorization.
Measure power and ground under load
Apply the approved start test and perform voltage-drop checks across the positive and ground paths.
The high-current path stays within the applicable vehicle/test limits.
Excessive loss supports cable, terminal, or ground investigation before condemning the starter.
Verify the repair
Repeat cold and warm starts, shifter positions, and the original symptom conditions after the supported correction.
The engine cranks consistently without abnormal heat, noise, or voltage loss.
A single successful jump or start does not prove the root cause is resolved.
