What this test is for
Separate generation, control, belt, cable, battery, and load-related evidence after a battery or charging warning.
Use the procedure to narrow a cause group. The result must be interpreted against the exact vehicle, equipment, and conditions.
- 01PurposeSeparate generation, control, belt, cable, battery, and load-related evidence after a battery or charging warning.
- 02PrepareBattery tester / Digital multimeter
- 03MeasureCapture the warning pattern / Inspect the drive and connections
- 04InterpretCharging systems can vary output with load, temperature, and commands, so context is part of the test.
- 05ContinueVoltage-drop test / Battery condition test
Follow the sequence, stop when evidence changes the path, and verify the exact vehicle information before acting.
Preserve the operating conditions, equipment setup, and result before moving to the next branch.
Tools and preparation
- Battery tester
- Digital multimeter
- Scan tool when supported
- Service information
Procedure and interpretation
Capture the warning pattern
Record lamp timing, electrical resets, belt noise, steering changes, temperature, and recent battery work.
The operating condition is reproducible or clearly described.
Charging systems can vary output with load, temperature, and commands, so context is part of the test.
Inspect the drive and connections
With the engine off, inspect the belt path, terminals, grounds, fusible links, and visible wiring.
No obvious mechanical or connection fault is found.
An alternator can be healthy while the path to the battery is not.
Measure with the specified load
Use the exact vehicle/tester procedure and compare readings at the source and load points.
Output and voltage loss fit the applicable vehicle strategy and test limits.
An isolated number outside a generic internet range is not enough to condemn a component.
Verify the repair path
Correct the supported fault, then repeat the original warning and load conditions.
The warning does not return and the battery remains supported.
A repair is incomplete if the battery is still discharged or another fault remains.
Record this test result
Save a bounded result and note to the selected vehicle. This is a personal record, not a verified diagnosis.
Choose a vehicle in My Garage or the vehicle selector first. IAR will not attach a test result to an unknown vehicle.
What to test next
Safety boundary
Moving belts and high current
Keep hands, clothing, and test leads away from rotating parts. Do not short charging terminals or disconnect a battery to test output.
